Fixing broken hyperlinks in FrontPage 2000-based Webs

One of the most common, and annoying, problems with many Web sites is broken hyperlinks: those that have an invalid destination URL (Uniform Resource Locator). When you create your Web site by using FrontPage® 2000, you can easily find and fix broken hyperlinks.

One of the most useful site-management features in FrontPage is the Reports view. You can view reports on the status of your Web site, from a site summary to specific reports, including broken hyperlinks.

To work in Reports view

  1. Open a web.
  2. In the Views pane, click Reports to display the Site Summary report. Alternatively, on the View menu, point to Reports, and then click a specific report. A check mark shows the report that is currently displayed. Site Summary is a good place to start.

When you work in Reports view, you can choose which report you want to work with.

To choose a report in Reports view

  • On the Site Summary report, double-click a report in the Name column.

Or

  • On the Reporting Toolbar, select a report from the list. If this toolbar is not already displayed, on the View menu, point to Toolbars and then click Reporting.

The Site Summary report includes the following report items:

  • Hyperlinks
  • Unverified hyperlinks
  • Broken hyperlinks
  • External hyperlinks
  • Internal hyperlinks

The following figure shows a Site Summary report with the Broken Hyperlink report highlighted.

Once you view this report, you can find and fix broken hyperlinks. The following figure shows a Broken Hyperlinks report.

To fix broken hyperlinks

  1. In the Broken Hyperlinks report, double-click a broken link. FrontPage displays the Edit Hyperlink dialog box, shown in the following figure.
    Edit Hyperlinks dialog box
  2. If you want to edit the page on which the hyperlink appears, click Edit Page.
  3. If you want to replace the hyperlink on one or more pages, in the Edit Hyperlink dialog box, enter the correct hyperlink - which can be a page, a graphic, another site, or other destinations. Click Browse to look for the destination of the link if the Edit Hyperlink dialog box does not display it.
  4. Click Change in all pages or Change in selected pages, depending on where you want the links to be fixed.

Note  The Broken Hyperlinks report does not by default include external hyperlinks, which are hyperlinks that are outside the current web. To examine external hyperlinks, use the Verify Hyperlinks tool. Because FrontPage must search the World Wide Web to verify each external hyperlink, this operation might take a few minutes for large webs. Before verifying hyperlinks, you should save all open or changed pages.

To verify and fix external hyperlinks

  1. On the Reporting toolbar, click Verify Hyperlinks.
  2. Click Verify all hyperlinks.

Things to keep in mind when fixing broken hyperlinks:

  • Not all pages that show up in the report necessarily appear on your site.
  • If your web contains files located in hidden folders, those files are not included by default in the Broken Hyperlinks report.
  • You can assign fixing a broken hyperlink to a task by right-clicking the hyperlink and then clicking Add Task on the shortcut menu. A task is an item associated with a web in FrontPage, representing an action you need to perform to complete or maintain the web.
