Merging and combining are terms that have similar meanings, but in Excel, they are two different things. For example, if you have several columns of information over which you'd like to spread one title, you'd merge cells to get that effect. If you have information such as first and last names in
separate columns, you'd combine the cell contents to show the names together in one column.
