Tips for better search results

When you're looking for the perfect clip art, here are some tips that will help you find it:

  • Check your spelling.
  • Type fewer search words. A search with 1 or 2 words will return the best results. Please note that only phrases and terms that are commonly treated as one word — such as birthday cakes, business metaphors, percent signs, New Year's Eve, and people at work — will get results. Simply adding adjectives to a word will not always work. For example, typing traffic signals in the Search box will get results, but typing red traffic signals will not.
  • Try different search words. For example, type dog instead of canine. Type inline skates instead of rollerblades™; type jet-propelled watercraft instead of Jet ski™ (trademarked keywords are ignored).
  • For the broadest scope for your search for media, select All media types in the Search drop-down list.
  • To narrow down the scope of your search, click a category on the Clip Art and Media home page on Microsoft Office Online, and then type a search word in the Search box. For example, click the category Black & White, and then type bike in the Search box.
  • Don't use wildcard characters (*.*).
  • Don't use file extensions in your search. For example, the file name j0401484.jpg will not bring any search results, but j0401484 will.
  • Search only for words in the language supported by the site that you’re browsing. For example, use only German keywords on the Germany site; use only English keywords on the US site.

Examples of good searches

cats (instead of felines)

cell phone (instead of phone)

laptop (instead of computer)

women (instead of people - more specific query)

roses (instead of flowers - more specific query)
