Send and receive photos and attachments with confidence

Two messages one with photo inserted as file the other with photo inserted as inline picture in the message

Two ways to attach pictures to your messages.
Callout 1 When you include a picture as a file (by clicking File on the Insert menu), you'll see its file name included in the Attach box.
Callout 2 When you embed the picture (by clicking Picture on the Insert menu or pasting it into your message), the picture becomes part of the message text.

The first step you'll take when you send a picture or a file will be to create the e-mail message. The next step will depend on whether you're sending a picture or another type of file:

  • As you can see in the illustration, if you're sending a picture, you can send it as a file attachment or as an image that appears inline with your message text. (Inline pictures are only allowed in HTML or Rich Text formatted messages.)
  • When you send a file that's not a picture — for example, a Word document, you don't have to choose: it is always included as an attachment.

More on these options later.

Note    If your message is formatted in HTML or Plain Text, your recipient will see attachments in the Attachments box. If your message is formatted in Rich Text format, they'll see the file attachment as a little file icon inline in the message. For more information about how a message's format affects how you'll see an attachment, see Control how you send and see mail messages.
