If you selected an Editing Language in the Set the Office Language Preferences dialog box, but haven't enabled the keyboard layout or installed the proofing tools for that language, you might see either the Not enabled or Not installed messages. These mean that, for the language that you selected, the keyboard layout has not been enabled or the proofing tools have not been installed.
What do you want to do?
Enable a keyboard layout
Keyboard layouts control which characters appear on the screen when you press the keys on your keyboard. They enable you to directly type all the characters for a language, including diacritical marks such as the umlaut (ä) in German and the tilde (ñ) in Spanish. To see an example of the keyboard layouts supported by Windows, see Windows Keyboard Layouts.
- In the Set the Office Language Preferences dialog box, in the Choose Editing Languages box, click Not enabled.
- In the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box, on the Settings tab, click Add, and then select the language that you want to use.
- In the Input language list, click the language that you want.
Notes
- If there is more than one keyboard available for that language, in the keyboard layout/IME list, click the keyboard style that you want.
- To see an example of each language's keyboard layout, see Windows Keyboard Layouts.

Install proofing tools
Proofing tools include spelling and grammar checkers, thesauri, and AutoCorrect lists for specific languages.
Depending on your language version of Office and the companion language proofing tools that are included, you might only have to select the Editing Language that you want for that language's proofing tools to be installed. If the proofing tools for that language that you want are not included with your language of Office, you might need to obtain an Office Language Pack.
- To get a language pack, in the Set the Office Language Preferences dialog box, in the Choose Editing Language box, click Not installed.
Note If your computer has the proofing tools for that language already installed, it automatically displays as Installed.
