Let's migrate from Windows Mail

A lot of people use Windows Mail as their e-mail software. You can bring over (import) e-mails you have received, your address book, and mail account settings in Windows Mail to Outlook. Let's take this opportunity to have some fun and make the change to Outlook.

The first time you start Outlook, a screen is displayed asking you if you want to import your e-mail and address book from Windows Mail. People who have already completed the import do not have to do anything.

  1. Let's import

In the Outlook menu bar on the File menu, select Import and Export. The wizard is displayed. When you have finished the action in each window, click the Next button to go forward.

  2. Import e-mail and addresses

  3. Let's select the application to import from

Select Windows Mail as the application to import from. Check that Import Mail and Import Address book are both selected.

Select the application to import from

  4. Let's select address options

You choose how names and e-mail addresses that are duplicated are processed in your Outlook Contacts. When you select Allow duplicates to be created, each contact is created separately so, to be safe, let's choose that option. Finally, click the Finish button to import.

    Duplicates are imported also

  5. Let's check in Outlook

Finally, the Import Summary dialog box is displayed, and you can see, at a glance, a summary of each of the items imported. Click Save in Inbox to send to Outlook as e-mail. Let's see if the e-mail and addresses have been properly imported into Outlook.

    Save in Inbox

To import e-mail account settings, select Import Internet Mail Account Settings in Step 2.
The Windows Mail settings are displayed as is. After checking them, click the Finish button.

Tip: Windows Mail? Outlook Express?

Doctor

In the past, Windows Mail was called "Outlook Express". The name changed with Windows Vista, and it is now called Windows Mail.
