Show or hide the Navigation Pane

The Navigation Pane provides a quick view to the objects in your Access database, and makes it easier to navigate the database. The Navigation Pane also offers features to help you customize navigation for your database. This article explains how you can show or hide the Navigation Pane and how you can set the option in an open database so that the Navigation Pane either appears or does not appear the next time the database is opened.

What do you want to do?

Show or hide the Navigation Pane

If the Navigation Pane is not visible the first time you open a new blank database in Microsoft Access 2013, on the Home tab, in the Show group, click Navigation Pane.

To hide the Navigation Pane and increase your workspace you can do any one of the following:

  • On the Home tab, in the Show group, click Navigation Pane.
  • Click Shutter Bar Open/Close arrow in the Navigation Pane
  • Press F11.

Prevent the Navigation Pane from displaying

When you don’t want the Navigation Pane to display whenever the database is opened, make the following changes:

  1. Open the database.
  2. Click File, and Options.
  1. Click the Current Database category, and under Navigation, clear the Display Navigation Pane check box.

If want the Navigation Pane to display make sure that the check box is selected.

  1. Click OK, and then close and reopen the database to see the effects.

Note   We do not recommend hiding the Navigation Pane unless the database employs an alternate navigation option or links that enable your database users to be able to access the objects in the database.
