Create a site

You can quickly create a site where you can collaborate with others, as long as you have permission to create sites.

  1. At the top of the site, click Sites.
  2. On the Sites page, click new site.

  3. In the Start a new site dialog box, give your site a name, and then click Create.


 Notes 

  • The first time you click Sites, you see some site setup screens and instructions while your personal site is being set up. You may have to wait awhile and then click Sites again before continuing to step 2.
  • Depending how your site is set up, the new site link can create a site collection or a subsite and you may be able to choose a portion of the address where the site is created.

Your site will be created in the location that your administrator has predefined and the site will appear among the sites you’re following. Your site will not inherit the permission settings or navigation of other sites. Now that your site is created, you can add documents and use the getting started tiles to share your site with others, change the look, add apps to the site, and more.

Create a subsite

If you want to create a site to manage content related to an existing team or project, you can create a subsite off of that team or project site. For example, you could create a team blog as a subsite to your team site.

Before creating a subsite, make sure you are at the location on your site where you want to create the new subsite. To create a subsite you need to have at least permission equivalent to being in the Designers group on that site. When you create a subsite, you can choose from several site templates, such as a blog, community site, or project site.

  1. Click Settings Options button > Site contents.
  2. On the Site Contents page, click new subsite.

     Note    If the new subsite link doesn’t appear on the Site Contents page, you don’t have permission to create a subsite.

  3. Type a Title and URL name for the site, and select a template. If you want to, you can also change the permissions and navigation settings for the site on this page.
  4. When the initial settings look good, click Create.

Introduction to sites, pages, and site collections

A site is a group of related Web pages and apps where your team can work on projects and share information. Multiple subsites and pages relating to a particular project, team, group, or location can be organized together under a single site. When you create a subsite (or a site collection), you can choose from several site templates to build a site quickly.

Generally, terms like site, Web site, page, and Web page are used almost interchangeably. In SharePoint, the words site and page have more specific meanings. Sites usually are used as locations for group collaboration or information sharing. For example, common site templates include team site, blog, and document center. Pages on a site are designed to include a variety of Web Parts and don’t have their own navigation elements.

A grouping of sites, pages, and a top-level site is called a site collection. A top-level site is the site at the top of the site collection hierarchy and requires site collection administrator permissions to manage. Wherever you are in the site hierarchy, a higher level site is called a parent site, while a lower level site is called a subsite, or child site. Under the top-level site, you can group your content into subsites, and then organize it further into lower levels of subsites.

Whether you are permitted to create sites and pages depends on how your organization has configured the permissions for the site. Some organizations need to maintain tight control over who can create sites, or when and where sites are created. Other organizations allow users more freedom to create sites when needed.

You need to have at least the permissions equivalent to being in the Members group for the site to create subsites or pages on the site. Your site may have been configured to require different permissions. If you don’t have the necessary permissions, contact your site administrator.

Although a new site created from the Sites page does not inherit the appearance, permissions, and navigation of the parent site, a new subsite does inherit these settings from its parent site by default, although you can change these settings at any time. For example, the top link bar includes a series of hyperlinked site names across the top as part of the site navigation. You can allow your new subsite to inherit the top link bar behavior of the parent site, specify a different set of links, or remove it from the top of your subsite. You can also decide whether you want links to your new subsite to appear in the navigational elements of the parent site.
